Crafting Timeless Spaces: Plain English & Hørning’s Seamless Blend of Heritage and Craftsmanship

 When Plain English began designing their new showroom in Pimlico, they turned to Hørning to provide the perfect flooring to complement their vision. Working alongside Katie Fontana, Creative Director at Plain English, we helped select the ideal floor to bring her creative ideas to life. Katie, known for her meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality, emphasizes the crucial role of flooring in design:

“I believe that the floor is a key element in any interior and that an inappropriate choice of floor can ruin the effect of any room, no matter how good the joinery is. In particular, I like the effect of wider boards, as used by Georgian builders and the use of mixed-width planks, again typical of the period and something which gives a more interesting rhythm and energy to a space than even-width planks. There are fashions for certain timbers, but oak is always a classic choice so for the new showroom I chose a European oak, which tends to be more interesting and varied than American oak and with a non-shiny waxed finish to look as natural as possible. 

We looked at various flooring suppliers but were drawn to Hørning by their experience with heritage interiors and their ability to supply a wide variety of quality timbers in unusual lengths and sizes. Another important factor is of course the provenance and sustainability of natural products and Hørning have a long history of responsible sourcing and the creation of flooring products that utilise even the smallest offcuts of timber from the larger pieces. The showroom floor is much admired and has led to a number of flooring commissions from our clients so we look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Hørning.”
